Intel to Develop Crypto Mining Accelerators, Claims Circuits Will Deliver ‘1000x Better Performance per Watt’ – Raja M. Koduri, Intel’s senior vice president of Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group, wrote a blog post on Friday about blockchain technology and the “new bespoke compute group.” Intel, according to Koduri, is well aware that some blockchains “translate to an enormous amount of energy.” Customers are seeking for “scalable and sustainable solutions,” according to the Intel CEO.
According to Koduri’s blog post, “Intel will participate and support an open and secure blockchain ecosystem, and will assist progress this technology in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
According to Intel’s Koduri, the company’s first product will be released in 2022. Block (previously Square), Argo Blockchain, and Griid are among the first companies to win Intel’s blockchain accelerator. Intel Labs has been focusing on “reliable cryptography, hashing algorithms, and ultra-low voltage circuits” for decades, according to Koduri. Intel’s accelerator, according to the CEO, will offer greater performance per watt.
“We expect our circuit enhancements to offer a blockchain accelerator with over 1000x greater performance per watt than standard GPUs for SHA256-based mining,” Koduri writes in his blog post.
Intel has created a new custom computing group under its Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics business line to support these ideas. According to Koduri’s blog post, “the goal of this team is to design bespoke silicon platforms tailored for clients’ workloads, including blockchain and other unique accelerated supercomputing opportunities at the edge.”
